Green Energy
The Wood Pellet Revolution
Why wood pellet heating?
1) Cleaner Hydrocarbon fuels are running out – the story is pretty much the same everywhere; North Sea Oil reserves are rapidly declining and even the mighty Saudi fields (the largest in the world) have peaked and only ever smaller finds are being made. The ‘dash for gas’ has exhausted many easily accessible gas reserves and developing newer fields faces political problems, environmental issues and higher transportation costs.
2) Burning Hydrocarbon fuels releases huge amounts of CO2 – this is the ‘greenhouse effect’ gas that traps the earth’s radiation and is the ‘engine’ of global warming causing sea level rises and increasingly extreme weather conditions.
In the last hundred years CO2 levels have shot up from 270ppm (parts per million) to 350ppm and are forecast to reach 400ppm by 2010. Experts reckon a level of 600ppm will cause catastrophic global warming with widespread permanent flooding in coastal areas and devastating drought in tropical and sub tropical regions.
Burning coal releases twice as much CO2 as oil and gas so, unfortunately, the emerging coal based economies of China and India are propelling us even more rapidly towards globally unsustainable levels of CO2 emissions.
(3) Hydrocarbons (especially oil and gas) are too valuable to be ‘squandered’ on heating fuel and electricity generation. You wouldn’t dream of running you car on malt whisky (!!) so, equally, oil and gas should be used for manufacture of plastics, pharmaceuticals, etc, and for transport fuel where coal, nuclear and other renewables are not practical.
(4) Hydrocarbon fuel costs will continue to escalate in real terms as global reserves decline. For sure, there will be short and medium term swings but the long run is only going one way.
So, there are at least four compelling reasons to find other ways of heating our buildings than by burning fossil fuels.
Heat pumps, solar panels, wind turbines and photo voltaic arrays (PV) can all have a part to play in the energy mix but they are very expensive, can have a long payback time and often come with practical installation difficulties.
An alternative - Wood Fuel
Wood fuel is essentially ‘carbon neutral’. The CO2 released on burning is only the same amount that the donor tree already ‘fixed’ from the atmosphere so it is a cyclical process and we can rest easy that, in burning wood, we are not adding to the global warming problem. This is provided we are burning wood from sustain ably managed forests (i.e. forests that are encouraged to re-grow after harvesting) then the cycle is ‘closed’ and the CO2 is recaptured.
Unfortunately, burning logs for heating is conventionally not an efficient process - even seasoned firewood can be 30 - 40% water and, in any case, the majority of the heat disappears up the chimney. Then on top of that, the fire requires frequent tending and regular ash removal.
Technology, however, is improving and the best log burners are now up to 85% efficient and, with a back boiler, can cheaply provide hot water for domestic heating and washing, etc – if you don’t mind the work . . .
In contrast to the ‘tyranny of the grate’, the modern wood pellet boiler is entirely automatic, requires no tending and only needs the ash emptying once a month!
Digital controls and fail safe engineering mean that wood pellet boilers are now a practical proposition for both domestic and commercial applications and offer immediate cash savings against LPG, heating oil or electric heating alternatives.
If you are on mains gas, the benefits at current prices are mainly environmental, however, with 5 and 10 year fixed price pellet contracts available, it cannot be long before even mains gas is more expensive than wood pellet fuel . . .
If you are concerned about your environmental impact or want to see if you can save money on fuel bills (or both!) then give us a call and we will be pleased to recommend the appropriate solution for you.
At our offices we have a wood pellet boiler that provides all our space heating so if you would like a guided tour or more facts call Mike Barnsley (01252 797597) for more information.
